The ability to incorporate the landscape into interior design makes windows special. Even if you don’t live in a breathtaking location, these glass units can render your rooms more inviting.
However, merely installing double hung windows can’t magically turn Nature into an interior focal point. You have to be strategic with each of your design decisions to achieve your aesthetic goals.
Here are some pieces of practical advice to keep in mind when planning your window replacement.
Don’t Add Grilles
Grilles no longer serve any structural purpose in modern windows. These components are just for decoration, mainly highlighting the architectural character of particular home styles.
If you don’t have to embellish every casement window you have, don’t. Leave the glass unobstructed to capture an unbroken piece of the outdoors.
Install Picture Windows
If you have a large wall opening, you have plenty of options to consider. Usually, the more dramatic ones are bay and bow windows. These units consist of multiple glass panels and project outward. The problem of having them, though, is that they break an otherwise sweeping view.
A good alternative to this is the picture window. It has a singular panel, which acts like a glass wall. Since this non-operating unit doesn’t offer natural ventilation, use a configuration that includes a small sliding window to let the air circulate when wanted.
Pick a Dark Frame Color
To highlight vistas, go dark with your interior window frames like black or stained wood. The contrast between the darkness of the material and the brightness of sunlight can accentuate the landscape.
