What Does a Good Window Replacement Contract Look Like?

Contracts protect window contractors and their customers by managing expectations and setting the project’s terms and conditions. We list their key elements in this post.

Good Window Replacement

Contract Types

There are two common types of window replacement contracts:

1. Fixed-Price Contracts

These contracts have set deadlines and state the cost of materials, labor, permits, waste disposal and everything else involved in the project. They also indicate the penalties associated with delays.

Fixed-price contracts are generally preferable because they clearly define the cost of the project. Furthermore, if the contractor fails to include other expenses they’ve paid for or went beyond the contract’s stated budget, they can’t ask you for reimbursement.

2. Time-and-Materials Contracts

These contracts have flexible deadlines and budgets. Their terms can be changed depending on the time and materials necessary for the project. Reputable roofers rarely or never issue a time-and-materials contract because of the uncertainty associated with it.

The Details of a Typical Window Contract

A well-written window replacement contract includes all standard details, including your contractor’s mailing address, phone number and email address. Furthermore, it includes the project’s overview and scope of work.

A window replacement contract must include the final cost to be paid for the materials, labor and other expenses involved. The contract must also state the license number and liability insurance company covering the window contractor’s work.

The document should include the start date and deadline of the project, penalty amounts for delays, and the payment methods to be used. Lastly, it should state all termination clauses, liens, warranties and the contractor’s working hours.

Reviews

"We are very pleased with our new windows and sliding door. The crew showed up when they were scheduled and had to work through snow drifts. They all were very professional, efficient and respectful. They made sure we were knowledgeable about how to use the windows and had us inspect everything before they were done. Great job!!"
