4 Causes of Window Seal Failure

Do certain areas in your home feel drafty or too hot depending on the season? Chances are, your windows are the culprit or, more specifically, their seals. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming shares the most common reasons for window seal failure, and how they can be fixed.

1. Temperature Changes. Windows, like most other parts of your home’s exterior, are exposed to a wide range of temperatures. All materials expand and contract depending on the temperature. Some do it evenly so that they keep their shape. Others don’t, and this is when they start cracking or warping. If you’ve invested in windows with quality window seals, then you should expect reliable performance over a long time.

2. Installation Errors. Any kind of seal needs proper alignment to work. Windows are assembled from multiple pieces upon installation, which means an inexperienced installer is more likely to cause window seal failure. To prevent this, we at Renewal by Andersen train and certify our installers before they’re allowed to work on a client’s home. Also, our warranties include installation coverage. This means we will correct issues caused by installation mistakes.

3. Age. No window lasts forever, and window seals will fail at some point past the window’s expected life span. However, thanks to modern manufacturing methods and more durable materials, you can enjoy more years of reliable performance from modern windows compared to the ones made decades ago.

4. Physical Damage. Windows are not immune to physical damage. Whether caused by airborne debris, hailstones or an errant baseball, window seals can be punctured or otherwise damaged. Sometimes impact damage isn’t readily visible, considering that most of us would be looking for cracks in the glass or dents in the frame. When inspecting your windows for damage, it helps to feel around for noticeable temperature differences or air currents around the windows.

Investing in durable, high-quality windows can help avoid such problems in the long run. Learn more about how Renewal by Andersen of Wyoming can help by giving us a call at (307) 472-2199.
