Why Do Wood and Vinyl Windows Warp?

Warped windows simply do not pack as big of a punch – aesthetically speaking – as well-maintained windows do. Not to mention, warping is a serious problem that can completely compromise the energy efficiency of your home, leading to high energy costs and uncomfortable drafts around your home. So, what causes windows to warp?

Main Culprit: Moisture

Warping on windows can materialize in many forms. For example, bowing occurs when it bends along the surface of the window. Cupping, on the other hand, occurs when the window warps inward or outward, whereas twisting occurs when the edges of the window twist. All of these forms are usually caused by the same culprit: moisture. Because wood naturally absorbs and retains moisture, the material can easily become susceptible to rotting and warping. Vinyl suffers from the same problem.

How Does Warping Happen?

When moisture due to rainfall or other weather conditions is absorbed into your windows unevenly, it puts unnecessary stress on the windows. This stress forces windows to shrink and expand. When not treated immediately, the moisture damage can expand and ultimately affect the performance of your windows.

The Best Solution: Window Replacement

While it is possible to fix your warped windows by filling the gaps with weatherstripping or readjusting the tightness of the windows, you must keep in mind that a repair is simply a temporary solution. The only real way to fix warped windows is to replace them. You need to get new windows that properly fit the window openings and are not damaged at all. Andersen®-exclusive composite material Fibrex® windows are the main choice of homeowners because these windows are not only stronger than vinyl – they also offer superior insulation and energy efficiency.
