Top 3 Tips for Choosing Replacement Window Styles

Unless you already have a clear vision of how you want your windows to turn out, choosing the right window style for your home can be difficult. While we do offer beautiful replacement windows, beauty shouldn’t be your only consideration when choosing replacement windows.

For first timers who haven’t had your windows replaced before, the following tips might be useful:

Familiarize Yourself With Your Home’s Architectural Style

Your home’s existing architectural style should clue you in on which window styles will work, or, more importantly, which will not work. Once you have a sense of which styles to avoid, you have more freedom to try out different styles without accidentally choosing the wrong one.

Don’t Forget Your Family’s Health

The EPA reports that poor indoor air quality is among the top five health hazards in North America. Indoor air pollutants come from common household items, like paint, plastic products, and mold growth. These things emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulates that can trigger anything from mild allergies to severe respiratory problems.

Since we all spend 90% of our time inside indoor environments, this makes everyone vulnerable to these effects, making efficient indoor ventilation an important consideration. Certain window styles, like double hung windows and bay windows, provide better ventilation than others. Consider them when choosing your replacement window.

Consider the Sun’s Orientation

When certain areas of your home look dark even at high noon, consider replacing the windows in those areas with ones that let more light in. Install windows with large glass areas, like casement or bay and bow windows in parts of your home that need more light. A practice known as daylighting, it is particularly effective if you position your replacement windows relative to the sun’s orientation. Our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass options ensure that your indoors won’t accumulate heat from the sun even under long-term exposure.
