Why Do Wooden Doors Swell?

Swelling is a common issue in wooden doors, specifically those that do not have any protective finish. This is mainly due to the material’s susceptibility to temperature changes. Wood typically contracts when the air is dry and expands when it’s humid.

Here are some tips on how you can avoid swelling problems in wooden doors.

Prevent Moisture Problems

Moisture is usually the number one enemy of wooden doors. So, as much as possible, ensure that your door is not exposed to an excessive amount of moisture. Location is often a crucial factor in this, but you can also take preventive measures, such as applying protective finishes, that could help minimize the risk of water damage.

Check the Location of Your Door

Ideally, your door should not be installed in an area that receives too much sun exposure. That said, you should avoid western and southern exposures as much as possible. Apart from the amount of sunlight, you should also consider the moisture in the air. If these elements seem like they will pose problems for your door or even your casement window, you might want to abandon wood and opt for a different material that’s more appropriate to your local climate instead.

Switch to a High-Quality Door

Doors are an essential component of your home’s security, so it is only fitting to choose a sturdy and durable material for this purpose. Since wood can be a little high-maintenance and problematic, you might want to consider other door materials instead. Our doors are made with Fibrex® frames. Fibrex is resistant to rot, mold and corrosion, and it does not expand or contract as much as wood.
