Historically, hinged French doors have always been the preferred transitional elements for leading to the patio. Over time, though, sliding glazed door systems have become the norm.
In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming investigates why more and more patio doors glide instead of opening wide:
Sliding patio door systems need no room to operate. If space in your home is at a premium, they won’t take up any adjacent areas by gliding horizontally. You can place pieces of furniture and other obstructions near them without worrying too much about clearance.
The panels of sliding patio doors interlock. When closed and locked, they create a tight seal to keep unwanted drafts at bay. Having practically no gaps, they can trap conditioned air inside more effectively and prevent outside air from interfering with your indoor climate.
Unlike hinged doors, gliding ones often need just a gentle nudge to open or close. Although they’re generally more user-friendly, they can come with multiple locks to increase security and restrict access.
Further, sliding doors are easier to adjust when they become difficult to move due to house settling. With proper maintenance, it’s not uncommon for them to stay as convenient to use for decades as the day they were installed.
Most importantly, sliding door systems are less prone to mechanical problems. The track supports the weight of their panels, putting less stress on their hardware. Unlike the hinges of typical French doors, the rollers of gliding doors usually last longer and require less service over the years.
At Renewal by Andersen of Wyoming, we offer three models of sliding patio door systems. Our Narroline® and Perma-Shield® units are consistent with the aesthetic of contemporary door systems. On the other hand, our Frenchwood® gliding patio door features everything lovable about the classic French door, except it’s in a space-saving format.
