Removing Mold From the Window Sill

Although windows have the job of keeping moisture out of the home, the sills are still at risk for condensation and dampening.

Removing black mold from a window casing isn’t a difficult task, but you want to make sure you do it safely and carefully to ensure your good health as well as the good health of your home. With that being said, we’re going to give you the easiest solution for removing mold from your window sills.

6 Steps for Removing Window Sill Mold

1. Open up a window so that while you work you’re providing your lungs with fresh air, and you’re allowing the casing to dry out.
2. Put on gloves, a face mask, and safety goggles.
3. To prevent the mold spores from entering the air, dampen the affected area with a spray bottle. Although mold flourishes in a moist environment, the spores will enter into the air as you’re removing them, so if you dampen the sills, you’re essentially gluing the existing spores down.
4. Take some dish washing detergent and water – this will become your cleaning solution. You’ll want to grab some paper towels and apply the solution to sills, and if it’s hard to remove, grab a plastic scraper to help loosen it, and then apply more of your cleaning solution.
5. Take a half cup of bleach and mix it into a gallon of water (since bleach is so strong, you want to make sure to add plenty of water). You’ll want to then take a rag and scrub the areas affected by mold. After you’ve applied it to the sills, let it sit for about 15 minutes.
6. Rinse the casings thoroughly with water and allow them to dry. If there isn’t a strong enough breeze outside for the casings to dry, set up a fan to expedite the process.
