How to Check if Your Window Seals Have Failed

Windows are an essential part of your home’s insulation system, which means they must have tight seals to keep the air from your HVAC system from escaping. If these seals start to wear down, they can cause drafts, leaks and other issues that can lead to an increase in your energy bills. Therefore, it is prudent to inspect your windows regularly for signs of failed window seals so you can take the necessary steps to fix them before it becomes a bigger issue.

Window Seals Have Failed

In this blog, Renewal by Andersen® of Wyoming, the trusted source of high-quality replacement windows and doors, explains how you can check for window seal failure.

Signs of Failed Window Seals

  • Visible signs of damage. Cracks or gaps around the frame or glass pane mean there’s something wrong with the sealant on your window frames. You should also look for areas where caulking has peeled away from the frame, as this could mean moisture has penetrated behind it, causing further deterioration over time.
  • Drafts and air leaks. Check around your window frames for any cold spots. It is an indication of an air leak that might be coming from a worn-out sealant joint between two parts of the window assembly.
  • Condensation. Most of the time, condensation on windows is a sign of a tightly sealed window. However, fogging in between the glass panels means that the sealants have started to fail. At this point, the only fix is to have the affected windows replaced by your trusted local window contractor.

How to Check if Window Seals Have Failed

  • Visual inspection. Inspect each window unit carefully for visible signs such as cracks in caulking material or other evidence indicating compromised insulation integrity.
  • Infrared thermometer. An infrared thermometer can help detect temperature variations along different sections, which could point towards possible air infiltration due to degraded seals.
  • Smoke test. A smoke test involves creating small plumes near suspected areas where there might be undetected openings; if these appear at certain points, then those are likely places with broken seals.

These methods can help you determine if your window seals have failed and need to be repaired or replaced. If the signs of seal degradation coincide with the fact that your windows are already past their life span, a window replacement would be the best option.

"We love our new windows. The install was painless even with moving around 3 dogs as the crew worked through the house. So glad we went with Anderson windows."
